Demonstrating the Need for Green Public Space
Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event that inspires city dwellers everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary spots for the puclic good. This event is a guerilla movement that attempts to bring attention to the need for public green areas in urban centers. Participants purchase metered parking spaces and transform them into temporary parks, often rolling out sod or Astroturf and setting out potted plants. Park(ing) Day was started 5 years ago in San Francisco by art and design studio Rebar.
Park(ing) Day was held September 17, 2010. Wilmington Downtown, Inc (WDI) and Coastal Landscape Architects brought attention to the need for more urban park by paying for a metered parking spot on Front Street between Market and Princess Street. “WDI decided to implement this event as a means to draw greater awareness to the need for more park space downtown,” said John Hinnant, Executive Director of Wilmington Downtown, Inc.
Park(ing) Day is an open-source experiment in spatial remixing created by independently-operated groups around the globe.
