May 1- May 7
The Wells Fargo Championship Golf Tournament is coming to New Hanover County in May. This tournament will attract strong attendance and an international television viewing audience that will allow us to showcase Wilmington to the world. With its great vibe and mix of shops, restaurants and attractions, Downtown will be a hub of activity during the entire week. It will also serve as one of two transportation centers where attendees can catch shuttles to and from the course. Oh yeah, did we happen to mention that this weekend also includes Cinco de Mayo, UNCW graduation and a One Tree Hill convention?
With all of this in mind, WDI is coordinating the Play a Round - Downtown as a way to showcase all that Downtown and Wilmington has to offer. Based around a golf theme and using its own unique name, we envision a week long set of activities and events for locals and visitors alike. We need help to make it happen.
Activities: The event will feature several interactive elements.
- Happy Gilmore Putting Green: Located at the Downtown shuttle stop, this artificial turf putting green would feature several holes and be free to use. As people are waiting for the shuttle, they can hit a few putts to fill the time. Sponsor name or logo featured on signs surrounding the green and on the flag sticks. “Just tap it in….”
- Tin Cup Stroll: Special flag sticks will be constructed and displayed at various businesses throughout the entire week. These life-sized flagsticks will be a visual signal to show support for the tournament and welcome golf enthusiasts, other visitors and local residents to the store. Each display will include the sponsor’s name or logo and the flags will become a keepsake for participating shops. A scavenger hunt with a social media component will be held to encourage people to walk the course, rather than ride.
- It’s a Gimme Movie: Partnering with the local film industry, a free, walk up movie night will be held on Thursday evening to kick off the weekend. The golf theme flick will be at Riverfront Park.
- The Caddy Shack Concerts: The sponsor will also receive great exposure at free concerts held on both Friday and Saturday night. Headlined by local or regional musicians, the shows will use the logistics of the highly successful Downtown Sundown Concert Series that WDI also produces. Heading into its 12th season as the community’s signature summertime event, this concert will be the first shows back at the newly renovated Riverfront Park. These free, family friendly concerts typically attract an audience of 3,000 people or so each evening.
