17th Annual CUCALORUS FILM FESTIVAL November 10-13, 2011 Wilmington, North Carolina “Cucalorus is the place to be.” –MovieMaker Magazine
Cucalorus wants your film, especially if you live in Wilmington. New this year, no entry fee for artists living within the city limits. Local filmmakers can submit up to three films for FREE! Director Dan Brawley says, “We just felt like local artists deserved more support from Cucalorus. We rely on the creative energy of the local film community in order to survive, so we really wanted to make sure that we were giving back as much as we’re getting. This was just one way to recognize local filmmakers and support their efforts.”
The 17th Cucalorus Film Festival seeks submissions from independent filmmakers and video artists. The festival is a non-competitive showcase of features, shorts and documentaries from around the world held each November in the historic port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. The festival screens over 150 films from emerging and established artists. Cucalorus headquarters is located in downtown Wilmington, home to EUE Screen Gems Studios (one of the largest film production facilities in the US) and a resurgent independent film scene.
Cucalorus avoids the red carpet spectacle, choosing instead to create an authentic experience for audience and artist interaction. Cucalorus is known for its inclusive rock n' roll atmosphere, with high-energy screenings and a host of late night parties, music, performance art and a lil’ bit o’ moonshine. The festival fuses noteworthy regional works with a broad selection of international films. The festival’s UK Spotlight program screens a selection of the best contemporary filmmakers from the United Kingdom. Organizers are also planning to launch a retrospective program featuring a filmmaker who has had a significant impact on North Carolina film culture. Cucalorus will announce the artist for this year’s retrospective in early June.
Walkable and welcoming; Cucalorus invites you to join us for a progressive southern film festival. Attracting a dedicated congregation of filmmakers and artists, “the festival is a place where spectators and creators collide, leaving us all just a little more inspired and a lot more aware.” Cucalorus was just recognized in the Spring issue of MovieMaker Magazine as “One of the 25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2011”.
Cucalorians accept films from all genres. All artists must submit 2 dvds, one inappropriate collage, entry form, and fee. Contact our office to find out how to submit your film in an online format. The entry fee is $25 if postmarked by June 14, $35 if postmarked by July 14, and $45 if postmarked by July 28. Submit online at cucalorus.org or go to withoutabox.com. And of course, feel free to call our office for more information.
