WILMINGTON, N.C. – Since opening in May, visitors to the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science have been set adrift in a world of bandits, treasure and scallywags in the new Pirates exhibit.
Pirates of the New World – a motley mob that sailed the waters from the Carolinas to the Caribbean – are the stars of this exhibit, including Blackbeard himself. Kids of all ages can play pirate games, learn to speak like a pirate, and uncover a rich buried treasure of pirate facts and fiction.
The exhibit is free with paid Museum admission. Pirates was developed and is owned by the Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, Gastonia, North Carolina.
Local landlubbers can delve more into the world of piracy with these fun and interactive programs:
Learning Center: Pirates Invasion
Dates: Saturday, June 25, July 2, 9, 16, 30
Times: 1:00-4:00 PM
Ages: Appropriate for children ages 5 to 12. Parental participation is required.
Fee: Free with Museum admission.
What were pirates really like? Discover the world of pirates as you make and hoist your own Jolly Roger, get a pirate tattoo, and make a Lego pirate ship. Dress up like a privateer and learn how to tie knots aboard a ship. Play pirate games and go on an exciting treasure hunt through the Museum!
Summer Shorts: Pirates, Ahoy*
Dates/Times: This 60-minute program is available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM.
Ages: Programs are adaptable for groups of 10 or more children aged 5 – 14.
Fee: $5 per person. Pre-registration required.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday; seven days a week Memorial Day through Labor Day. General admission is $7 for adults; $6 for students with valid ID and senior citizens; $6 special military rate with valid military ID; $4 for children 3-17; and free for children under 3. Museum members are admitted free. New Hanover County residents’ free day is the first Sunday of each month. The Museum is located at 814 Market Street in historic downtown Wilmington, N.C.
