PARK(ing) Day is September 16, and Wilmington Downtown, Inc. (WDI) is teaming up with Coastal Landscape Architects to bring attention to the need for more urban parks. WDI will pay for a metered parking spot on Front Street between Chestnut and Grace Streets from 9:00am to 5:00pm this Friday.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event that invites citizens everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good. Originally invented in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. PARK(ing) Day 2010 included more than 800 "PARK" installations in more than 180 cities in 30 countries on six continents.

"PARK(ing) Day gives WDI an opportunity to highlight the need for more green space in downtown Wilmington. On a per capita basis, downtown Wilmington has significantly less green space than those communities we benchmark against," says John Hinnant, President & CEO of WDI.

PARK(ing) Day is an "open-source" user-generated invention created by independent groups around the globe who adapt the project to champion creative, social or political causes that are relevant to their local urban conditions. A global map of all participating cities are available on the PARK(ing) Day website, at parkingday.org.
