If you think A Christmas Shoppe is just a place to visit in December, you would be surprised to discover this festive Downtown Wilmington business is even more popular in the summer months! It’s hard to ignore the twinkling lights, trees laden with ornaments and the delightful decorations that adorn the windows year-round.
Stop momentarily to admire the charming window displays. As your mind wanders to comforting thoughts of family and the holidays, step inside to see much more. Feel the cheer of the holiday music and soak up the irresistible aroma of warm apple pie.
People from all generations find something to love in this family-owned store. The owner, Deb Woody, said it all started with a cockle shell. Shortly after moving to Wilmington a number of years ago, she was collecting shells and became inspired to volunteer at the local turtle hospital. In her spare time, she nurtured her creative side. Her grandmother taught her how to sew and paint at a young age, so she started painting turtles on the inside of cockle shells. Friends began asking her to do more and to make them into Christmas ornaments. The shell craft grew into a small business and she added Santas made from oyster shells, wreaths, paintings, yard art, floral silks, pillows and more.
A series of events led to Deb seeking a retail location downtown. Initially, she opened a store in the Old City Market and then moved to Chandler’s Wharf. When she outgrew that space, she moved into her current location on Front Street which is now stocked with a vast array of art, decorations and collectibles.
Year-round, customers love to buy unique or themed ornaments for their collections; they make great gifts too. Many ornaments become treasured family heirlooms. Artwork and accent pillows that enhance any home décor are always popular.
