Spring is just around the corner making this a great time to introduce a fresh approach to the Municipal Service District (MSD) Ambassador program. Hint, hint…no more bright orange shirts! Since introducing the Ambassadors to Downtown Wilmington in 2017, great things have been happening and you can keep up with their progress through our Feat of the Week blog.
Meanwhile, the center city continues to experience a healthy growth of residences, businesses and visitors. With growth comes change and the public perception of downtown has evolved.
At the inception of the MSD, the biggest concerns were about safety so the Ambassador program was introduced to provide extra sets of eyes and ears on the streets. In 2018, the Downtown crime rate dropped 27 percent. In 2019, the rate decreased by another eight percent. This is great news and reflects a community-wide effort, including the police and the Ambassadors, to reduce crime.
Improved safety has brought more people to the center city to shop, dine and play. With the influx of people, we have found that visitors and newcomers require more hospitality assistance. For this reason, we are shifting the emphasis to focus more on hospitality services.
Under direction from the new vendor, named Block by Block, you will now start seeing our friendly Ambassadors around the center city wearing (Carolina Panther) blue shirts and khakis.
In addition to being more personable, the Ambassadors will continue to ensure downtown is safe and inviting for everyone. They will still be on-hand to remove stickers and graffiti and help keep the sidewalks free of trash. The Ambassadors also provide concierge assistance. They will escort you safely back to your car if requested. And, if it rains, they will share an umbrella with you.
The Ambassador team is available seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Hours on Fridays and Saturdays are 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
They can be also be reached during operating hours by calling 910.524.3600 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
