Owner and chef, Sam Calhoun of Savorez, is not one to brag about his accolades but considering his restaurant has only been open a year in Downtown Wilmington, the awards are stacking up. We caught up with him shortly after he had advanced to the final round of the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association’s Chef Showdown. He will compete for the title August 27th in Charlotte.
Talking to him at Savorez, it’s easy to see why his restaurant is successful. Not only does he offer high quality, affordable food and drink, he also has a selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options on the menu and he keeps the menu simple and fresh. His goal is to do things you can’t find elsewhere—like offering parrot fish as a special—and to keep ahead of local trends.
Inspired by what goes on around him, Calhoun believes every day is a special day!
