Beautifying Downtown Takes Time and Water!

Posted Aug 13th, 2018 in Feat of the Week

At 7:00 a.m., long before many of us are out and about, the Municipal Service District Ambassadors are hard at work maintaining one of the most recent additions to the Downtown landscape—the hanging flower baskets on Front Street and North 4th Street.

All 150 water baskets were delivered pre-fed with granular fertilizer; however, in order to survive the extreme North Carolina summer heat, they need water—and lots of it! In fact, they drink up 250-300 gallons of water in total! And, because of the lack of shade in many areas, they need watering regularly.

The watering starts early to avoid traffic and disruption to businesses and to give the water a chance to soak in before the temperatures rise. Using a pressure washer tank on the back of a pick-up truck with a specially crafted adaptor, it takes two ambassadors two to three hours to water all the baskets. So, remember next time you’re Downtown to take a moment to look up and appreciate the flowers.
