Forty years ago, when the internet and eBooks were in their infancy and almost twenty years before e-readers were launched, physical books, magazines and newspapers were the main reading sources for people. Back then, the primary function of libraries was to give everyone access to printed materials and independent book stores were a common sight in every town and city.
This was also the time when the independent book store, The Bookery, was established in Downtown Wilmington. It changed hands in the early '90s and the two sisters, Mary House and Wanda Cagiano, who took over the business, added "Two Sisters" to the name. Fast-forward to today and Two Sisters Bookery is now owned and operated by Christine Greer, the sixth owner of the business. Christine is from Virginia and, like a couple of the previous owners, made the transition to being a business owner in a very short space of time. Within six weeks of her daughter telling her the business was for sale in June 2017, she had bought it and moved to Wilmington.
The acquisition came at a time when Christine needed a new challenge. Independent book stores face competition in the digital era and Christine works hard to provide a destination people from anywhere can enjoy. She knows social media is important and is constantly updating the store's digital footprint.
The store is located on the Water Street side of The Cotton Exchange and has a good selection of books. Christine has grown the local history and spirituality sections and stocks a great selection of cook books. You can also buy popular side items like Snoozies, tote bags, tea towels, Sassafras mats and Evergreen flags.
To support local authors and encourage people to share a love of reading, Christine hosts a book club on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and provides themed food and drink based on the book title. Look out for new activities on Sundays that may include story time for kids.
You are always welcome at Two Sisters Bookery. Stop by, browse the shelves, relax in a comfy chair, meet Katie, the resident cat and feed your imagination.
