Most people can recall a family recipe handed down through generations and many believe it could be good enough to sell. Two years ago, Danny Alvarez and Angela Piccinin hedged their bets on a recipe that had inspired an online business for a friend of the family. They acquired the business and Cape Fear Rum Cake was born.
Settled in Chandler’s Wharf overlooking the Cape Fear River in Downtown Wilmington, Danny and Angela quickly gained the skills to make and sell six basic flavors: golden vanilla, cherry chocolate, coconut, red velvet, pineapple and dark chocolate. Handmade from scratch, the cakes are produced in small batches and vacuum sealed to keep them fresh.
With the six most popular flavors being big sellers year-round, you wouldn’t think it necessary to introduce new flavors. Well, lucky for us, the owners of Cape Fear Rum Cake go the extra yard anyway by creating special flavors to match notable holidays or seasons.
Right now, chocolate lovers can switch up their regular order with the luxurious, chocolate-raspberry variety which will be available through the end of February to incorporate Valentine’s Day. As spring approaches, images of yellow daffodils come to mind, so you can feed your imagination with lemon rum cake. You can celebrate North Carolina’s berry season with strawberry or blueberry varieties and enjoy rum cakes with a refreshing hint of southern, key lime flavor throughout the summer.
Many southerners also love banana pudding, so Angela and Danny came up with the banana chocolate chip rum cake to satisfy that craving. Heading into fall, expect to find flavors like pumpkin chocolate chip and gingerbread. And, you can round out the year by indulging in egg nog rum cakes—which make popular gifts during the holiday season.
Although Cape Fear Rum Cake has a long shelf-life (six months because rum is a good preservative), Angela and Danny like customers to have their cakes as fresh as possible. If you are unable to make an order in person at the shop, they have an online service to quickly and directly ship your order. They even ship internationally!
Whether or not you drink rum, you should try a Cape Fear Rum Cake and ship your favorites to friends!
