Jess James, known to many as the “Style Girl” from the column by the same name she wrote for the Star News for a number of years, now owns and operates a vintage clothing store on Castle Street in Downtown Wilmington. The title suits her because Jess knows a lot about style.
Defining your personal style can be challenging and can take years to fine-tune. You know from past experiences what clothing and accessories don’t work for you but it can take a lot of trial and error to find a style you’re comfortable with. And this is where Jess the Style Girl can help.
Jess’s experience includes photographer, magazine fashion editor, writer, events manager, personal stylist at her own vintage showroom and most recently, DJ (The Beehive Blondes). She attributes her eye for fashion to her grandmother who owned multiple closets full of beautiful clothing. As a child, Jess loved to browse the racks, admire the accessories and listen to the stories her nana told about each outfit. She also learned to appreciate that quality clothing was made to last and could service the needs of many generations.
Over the years, Jess began collecting vintage clothing—unique pieces from the 1920s through to the 1970s—with many of the more modern vintage pieces having been inspired by the fun and care-free era of the 1920s. Today, she visits estate sales and searches antique malls and thrift stores to build her stock and fulfil her desire to help people define their style.
Alongside stylish, vintage clothing, her customers can also find antique books, prints, jewelry and accessories. The shop, Jess James & Co. is owner-operated so Jess is always on hand to give style advice. Who knows, by opting for unique vintage clothing, you may not only discover your own style, you may also inspire a new trend.
