Cousins Deli Feels Like Home

If you love Italian food and you love family, then you have to eat at Cousins Italian Deli in Downtown Wilmington. The slogan for the business, “Where great food is a family tradition,” says it all. The owner, Joe DeLiberto, credits his father and his family’s roots in Sicily for inspiring him to do what he does today.

One of Joe’s earliest childhood memories is waking up Sunday mornings to the smell of sauce simmering on the stove. Every Sunday, his father would make the sauce from scratch and the delicious aroma would fill the house throughout the day. The sauce and accompanying food served for dinner evoke fond memories.

Those happy times of enjoying good food at family gatherings have remained etched in his memory ever since.

In 1986, Joe and his cousin, Rich Freese, opened up a deli in Paterson, New Jersey, to make and sell the same kind of great food. Twenty years later, Joe moved to Wilmington NC for a change of lifestyle but found he missed the business. After a few years, he found the ideal spot for a Deli on 3rd Street in Downtown Wilmington and decided to continue the Cousins Deli name because it reflected his family values.

Having previous restaurant experience helped Joe adapt to the different culture in the southeast. Cousins has dine-in or take-out lunches during the week. During the weekend, Cousins has family-style dinners. The dinner experience is like no other in this area. Joe says, “I want you to feel like you are going to your grandmother’s house; you sit down and we feed you!” Dinner is a fixed price and is offered at specific seating times; you can also bring your own wine or beer.

Demand is high and reservations are a must for you to enjoy a true, family-style Italian dinner. Call today or stop by for lunch.
