Looking for something to do this weekend? Dinner and a show is always an option. Downtown Wilmington is thriving with an abundance of restaurants and entertainment venues so you have lots to choose from.

Delve into downtown’s dining scene by selecting from almost 100 eateries. Many restaurants roll out new menu options each season so you can discover your new fall favorite.

There are plenty of entertainment options too. With such a variety of art, theater and music to choose from, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The fall Faculty Art Show just opened at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery at Cape Fear Community College. This is free-to-attend event and showcases various formats of artwork in a comprehensive exhibition.

Hours: Mon-Fri, noon – 5:00 p.m.

Catch the last couple of shows of “Jitney” at Cape Fear Playhouse on Castle Street this weekend.

The story revolves around the African-American denizens of an unlicensed cab service in 1977 Pittsburgh. Both funny and poignant, this play has some great reviews.

Show Times: Fri, Sat – 8:00 p.m., Sun, 3:00 p.m.

“Puffs” is a show about kids with magical powers who attend a school for witches and wizards. With no connection to the famous Harry Potter series, it’s a story about success and failure and trying to fit in. The play is staged at the Ruth & Becky Stein Theatre at Thalian Hall. It’s family-friendly and a lot of fun.

Show Times: Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Saturday night will be popping at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s Pops: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin. Featuring vocalists Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw, this show will feature such classic hits as Respect, Natural Woman, Think and many others.

Show Time: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

The weekend entertainment continues through Sunday with a debut performance of Showstoppers at Thalian Hall by a new Wilmington theater troupe known as The Third Act Players.

Showstoppers is a collection of musical numbers, dances, monologues and other famous acts. Expect to hear musical selections from popular Broadway shows.

The final act is a unique live version of a top TV show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. This comedic, non-stop performance will take you on an exhilarating roller coaster ride through some of the cheesiest films ever made.
