Stepping inside A Proper Garden at the foot of Ann Street in Downtown Wilmington is like entering another world. The cozy entrance and small windows offer a mere glimpse of the treasures that lie within. Once inside, you can feel your troubles melt away with the pretty lighting, serene music and soft gurgling of ornamental fountains.
If you have a penchant for gurgling, you will love the Gurgle Pots—pitchers in the shape of fish that gurgle as you pour! These fascinating pots come in 25 different colors and can double as flower vases so you don’t have to hide them away. Another amusing product is the Chirpy Top Pourer—a bottle top shaped like a bird that chirps as you pour! This is guaranteed to entertain your guests while you fill their glasses.
Many of the products available at A Proper Garden are not available elsewhere in Wilmington because business owner Peg Beam tries to offer things that people can’t find in other shops. She cherry-picks items from innovative designers and small, family businesses and is proud of her distinctive merchandise. She says, “You can’t buy imagination.” She wants her customers to have a unique experience every time they visit and, although she allowed us to take a few pictures for this article, she encourages discovery and retains an air of mystery by discouraging photos inside the shop.
This approach may seem counter-intuitive in the digital era where everything is searchable online; however, her methods have proven effective and have resulted in 30 years of business success. That said, A Proper Garden does have an online presence and the website offers sufficient teasers to draw you in.
Open six days a week, A Proper Garden satisfies a niche market downtown with its high-quality gifts for gardeners, tools of the trade and home accessories. An added bonus is that you can park for free in the lot adjacent to the building.
