THE FOXES BOXES

Wilmington Downtown Incorporated, (WDI) in partnership with the Longleaf Foundation, implemented a grant

program to help sustain local businesses affected by Covid- 19 in Wilmington’s central business district,

Brooklyn Arts District, Castle Street to 17th Street, The Cargo District and the South Front District.

The grant program, known as Re-3 was designed to assist owners as they re-opened, re-stocked, and began to

re-cover from challenges and due to generosity of local individuals and businesses it quickly grew

into a fund that was able to issue grants to 37 companies.

THE FOXES BOXES is more than a restaurant on N. 4th Street: it’s a social enterprise with a mission to work with marginalized populations to provide on-the-job training for the hospitality and service industry by way of an “externship” program. Rachel and Randy Fox had finally been able to work with participants in early 2020 and then operations came to a screeching halt in March.

What First? When Rachel saw WDI’s application for RE-3 grants, she had her son on the assignment and her entry video was recorded within the hour! Once she was awarded a grant, her first action was to sit down with all of the bills that were due. The rent, their ABC Permit, and Liability insurance all needed to be paid. Thanks to Re-3, she was able to take care of those immediate items, and that burden gone, Rachel and Randy could move forward.

What’s Next? As of this writing, the restaurant is operating reduced hours and for pick up only. Family members and locals have been buying gift cards that are subsidizing meals for the organization’s externs and their families. The Foxes look forward to being able to host events like "What's Your Story? - Wednesdays" again soon. To learn more about the program, visit The Foxes Boxestfbxa.org, or their Facebook pages.
