Business owner, Tim Corbett, a retired special needs teacher, still has a need to nurture. To fulfill this need, he employs young adults with disabilities and, at the other end of the spectrum, college-bound high school students.
Nestled in The Old City Market on Water Street in Downtown Wilmington, Carolina Country Store draws its customers in with love. A sign outside advertising the Best Nuts in Town also says, “Free Hugs!” It also says that the store supports artisans with disabilities.
As you approach the store, you are offered free samples of a half dozen different types of gourmet nuts by one of the special employees. One of them, Michael, has Down’s syndrome; he also has a big smile and a great attitude.
Corbett opened The Carolina Country Store in 2009 and you can tell he loves the Carolinas by his wide range of products sourced from around the state—from gourmet grits to F.R.O.G. jelly and fiery hot sauces, there’s something for everyone.
P.S. – the honey-glazed pecans are divine!
