Fun Activities for your Labor Day Weekend Wish List

You can count on Downtown Wilmington to have a great selection of fun things for everyone this weekend. The center city will be buzzing with live music, theater, comedy, art, markets and more. Here are a few unique events for you to add to your weekend wish list.

Tonight’s Downtown Sundown Concert is the last in the 2019 series so gather your friends, stay a while and make a night of it. This free concert opens with local band Striking Copper and is followed by Departure, a Journey tribute band. Adult beverages are available for sale with the purchase of a $1 wristband. Proceeds from wristband sales benefit the Wilmington Professional Firefighter Association.

Hours: Friday, 6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the Ligon-Flynn lot at the corner of Market and 2nd Streets.

Fill your Labor Day weekend with laughter at the Port City’s Top Comic contest. Four groups of 12 mostly local comedians will compete in the preliminary rounds Friday and Saturday. The top three from each group of contenders will perform in the final on Sunday with the winner being selected by the audience.

Hours: Friday, Saturday, 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Sunday, 7:00 p.m. at Dead Crow Comedy Room.


The third Annual Port City Pride festival is a celebration of Wilmington’s LGBTQIA community. Join the fun on one or all three days. Friday night, the rainbow road bar crawl kicks off at The Husk. The block party held Saturday afternoon includes food, vendors and fun for all the family. The event wraps up with Sunday’s funday dance party on the fantail of the Battleship.

Hours: Friday, 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., Saturday, noon – 8:30 p.m. along Castle Street, Sunday, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at the Battleship.


If you fancy doing something a bit different this weekend and want to blow your mind with fascinating facts, join the Wilmington Water Tours Alligator Cruise. You will have the opportunity for a close-up encounter with a live, juvenile American alligator while learning intriguing tid-bits of information from the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher’s outreach educator. Cruise Time: Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.
