Get Your Fill of Live Music and Arts Downtown This Weekend

Posted May 24th, 2019 in Weekend Wish List

Summer will unofficially be here this weekend and Downtown Wilmington will be rocking with music and arts to keep you entertained.

Opening this Friday for its fourteenth year, is the Downtown Sundown Concert Series and the line-up of bands looks awesome. Local bands take the stage at 6:30 p.m. each Friday to get you warmed up for the touring tribute band headliners.

This Friday opens with The Phantom Playboys who bring the sounds of Rock-a-Billy and 50's rock-n-roll to the new Downtown Sundown Concert location. Because of repairs to the bulkhead at Riverfront Park, this year’s concerts have moved to the southwest corner of Market and 2nd Streets (also known as the Ligon Flynn lot). The new location is in the heart of Downtown and is close to hundreds of eateries and shops.

This week’s headliner is Satisfaction, an internationally acclaimed Rolling Stones tribute band that is renowned for its authentic cast and lively show. Because the concerts bring such a great crowd to Downtown, many of the merchants also stay open later giving you the perfect opportunity to catch up on a bit of shopping before catching the headliner at 8:00 p.m. The concerts are free to attend and drinks are for sale with the purchase of a $1 wristband. Proceeds from wristband sales go to a different charity each week.

Downtown is also showcasing its thriving arts scene this weekend starting with the Fourth Friday Gallery Walk. This is a self-guided tour of more than a dozen galleries which are open between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Come back Downtown Saturday or Sunday and immerse yourself in even more art at the 24th annual Orange Street ArtsFest (OSAF). This takes place at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Saturday and 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday.

The OSAF includes a juried art show, food trucks, live music and dance. More than 80 artists will be exhibiting and selling their work on Orange Street between Front and 2nd Streets. This year, there are extra fun activities for the kids in an interactive playroom provided by the Children’s Museum of Wilmington.

Be sure to come Downtown and fill up on free music and art. While you’re here, take some time to shop, dine and play!
