If you live, work or visit Downtown Wilmington, you have several places to park including decks, surface lots and on-street parking. You can also benefit from 90-minutes of FREE parking in the two City-operated parking decks and the New Hanover County deck next to the library. These are all just a short walk from the many downtown merchants and services. There are also several, privately-owned surface lots that allow public parking. Be sure to find the pay station and check the rates.
If you prefer to find on-street parking close to your destination, there are about 800 metered spaces downtown that cost just $1.50 per hour, Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. 400 of these spots have smart meters that can be operated by the PayByPhone app. Downtown Wilmington has an additional perk for people who enjoy visiting downtown for evening entertainment or for Sunday activities—on-street parking is FREE after 6:30 p.m. and on Sundays. All-day fixed rates apply for special events.
At times, notices are placed on meters for special events, like parades, street festivals, construction or film shooting. When there is a sign attached to the meters, parking is restricted according to the information on the sign.
As notices are usually posted on a meter two days before the parking space is closed, be sure to check the note. Often, you can still use the meter prior to the event day. If a meter is covered with a red bag, no parking is allowed at all. Vehicles in violation of these restrictions have an immobilization device attached (get “booted”) and, if not cleared within 24 hours, are towed.
With so many places to park for free or at minimal cost, it’s worth checking out the downtown parking options here.
