If you’re old enough, or hip enough, to have songs by David Bowie or Neil Young in your collection, then you’ll understand what Modern Legend is all about.
When coming up with a name for the business, Catherine Hawksworth combined elements of Bowie’s song title, “Modern Love” with Young’s “Unknown Legend.” The result—Modern Legend—would be a place where people of all ages could hang out, share their love of music and shop for vinyl, art, jewelry, clothing, gifts and accessories all in one location.
Modern Legend started out in the Cotton Exchange in 2016 and moved to North Front Street a year later. With a background in retail and music artist management, Catherine says the new location gave her the flexibility to sell merchandise during the day and to have small bands play in the shop at night. She loves engaging with the downtown community and having a laugh with customers. She is happiest when everyone is having a good time.
Catherine has fun marketing her business too. The entrance to the shop is just inside the Front Street Center so she always has the sandwich-board sign outside with a quirky statement that makes you smile.
Inside, the shop is welcoming. Contemporary décor has made her business a great place for people to stage photo shoots that work well for Instagrammers. It could also be because she has a nice comfy couch for customers! The merchandise displays are all mobile so can easily be pushed aside for evening entertainment.
Retail or music, everything Catherine does in Downtown Wilmington is community-driven. She loves to collaborate with other local businesses and often teams up with other female merchants to engage customers.
Being one of the Wilmington Business Journal’s 40 under 40 in 2019 has put Catherine in the spotlight—but that doesn’t faze her. She loves interacting with people in the shop and continues to discover and promote new bands as a talent buyer.
Catherine says Indie music is popular with today’s generation who tend to live a more minimalist lifestyle where experiences are more important than possessions. That said, Catherine says there is definitely a growth of the vinyl culture. In an era saturated by easily accessible digital music, it’s cool to own a record collection.
At Modern Legend, there’s a great selection of vinyl. You’ll find classics and greatest hits alongside modern tracks so you can kick back and relax, talk music and enjoy your shopping experience.
