NeMa Serves Good, Natural Food for All

With today’s growing market for all-natural ingredients instead of processed foods, restaurants like NeMa Burger & Pizza Lounge in Downtown Wilmington have attracted a dedicated following. An increased incidence of food allergies in modern society has also added to the demand for foods that are free of antibiotics, hormones and other additives.

For Mark Borkowski, a chef trained in classic French cuisine who has travelled widely, this was a priority when he and business partner, Neal Lovaas, embarked on their restaurant business here in 2015. Mark has personal experience with allergies and stays healthy by avoiding what he calls, “fake food.” At NeMa, he looks at every ingredient and makes most things in-house to minimize the use of genetically modified products. He has even created a special order sheet for customers with allergies so that kitchen staff knows to take extra precautions with food preparation.

Good kitchen practices underlie NeMa’s excellent reputation. The small, loyal staff ensures customer expectations are always met with consistent, high-quality food and attentive service. Mark’s tendency toward perfection shines through with every order he prepares.

And yet, he manages to keep NeMa’s food affordable with most menu items under $15! The menu includes an excellent selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free foods and it also has options for meat lovers. You can order artisan-style pizzas with sourdough or cauliflower crusts as well as Spanish-inspired traditional crusts, all of which are a labor of love! Even the French fries are double-fried to perfection.

Attention to detail is important for Mark and Neal whose goal was to create the quality experience associated with big-City restaurants in their cozy, Downtown Wilmington establishment. Located in Chandler’s Wharf toward the southern end of the Riverwalk, NeMa is worth visiting…especially for the popular cheese fries…and parking for customers is free in the adjacent, surface lot.
