The Redix store you see today in the 100-block of Grace Street in Downtown Wilmington is very different from the original business opened by Gordon D. Reddick Jr. in the 1940s. Back then, the first store was known as Big Gun Surplus and Gordon grew the business to 26 stores over 20 years.
After he died, his wife sold all but one store—the Wrightsville Beach location— and diversified the business to serve a changing market.
Offering a wide variety of apparel and general products to consumers and pulling together as a family has kept the Redix store in business for three generations. One of the third generation members of the Reddick family, Daniel, recalls his first job in the family business—sweeping the parking lot when he was just five years old! He doesn’t recall if he was paid but growing up in the business instilled a good work ethic. He and his siblings had summer jobs in the store from a young age and were held to a high standard.
In 2009, after college and a few years of working in insurance, Daniel rejoined the family business officially. He loves the Downtown Wilmington lifestyle, Riverwalk and restaurants so the family decided to expand the business and grow the customer base by opening a second location on Grace Street in 2015.
In four years, the store has served local residents and visitors of all ages. Daniel sees a steady stream of guests from the nearby hotels and enjoys providing concierge assistance for visitors seeking recommendations about things to do and places to go downtown.
Redix is just one of over 100 great stores in the center city and offers a great range of products from brands like Vineyard Vines, Salt Life, Yeti, Rainbow Sandals, Sperry and Scout. Next time you’re downtown, visit the store and enjoy the vibe of our thriving city.
