Rise to the Challenge and Find Your Way Out of an Escape Room

Posted Sep 13th, 2019 in Weekend Wish List

Last week, people in Downtown Wilmington hunkered down with a plan and prepared for the worst with the approach of Hurricane Dorian. The adrenaline was flowing until the storm passed by and the relief was palpable the following day.

We know hurricanes can be scary so if you want that adrenaline rush without the fear, two entertainment venues in Downtown Wilmington have better options. Imagine the thrill of entering a room where the scene is set for a mystery you must solve. The clock is ticking and time is limited for you to crack the codes and work as a team to unravel the secret that will lead to your escape.

Although both escape rooms have operated downtown for around three years, each is unique.

The Exit Games, at the corner of Market and North Front Streets, offers two games masterminded by Josh Skidmore and Taylor Pfyffer and built by Josh’s dad and craftsman, Frank. The Front Street Casino Heist requires you to nurture your inner conman to break into a vault in order to get the money that will grant your freedom. The Nightmare on Front Street game is only for the very brave!

Josh and Tay are escape room enthusiasts who have broken out of more than 100 rooms since 2012. They worked for months to create The Exit Games experiences and want customers to be engaged from the moment they enter, to feel challenged but not defeated. Unlimited clues can be requested and they recommend gamers write down notes during play. At $25 per person, rooms can be booked exclusively or shared with others. Large groups can take advantage of a collaboration Josh and Tay have with the event space on the top floor of the building.

The Exit Games Hours: Wed, Thurs, 4:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Fri, 4:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. Sat, 11:00 a.m. – 10:15 p.m. Sun, noon – 7:30 p.m. (closed Mon, Tues) Visit Attraction Website

The owners of Green Light Escape Room at 130 North Front Street, Felisha and David Prowant, chose to allow only exclusive booking of game rooms to be more family-friendly. At $26 per person, a minimum of three people is required in two of the game rooms and a minimum of four in the other two. Felisha and David are also veterans of escape rooms and are the masterminds behind all four games.

Each game has a difficulty score for guidance, although unlimited clues are available. Kidnapped is the perfect game for beginners; whereas, more experience is required for Alien Escape. If you’re looking for a laugh during the challenge, then opt for Escape the Roxbury, which is full of epic one-liners! The Brewery Heist, which took almost a year to create from concept to completion, is the most difficult yet the most popular game.

Whichever escape room you choose, the first time will be the hardest and the time pressure may be unnerving, but you will be motivated by the challenge. Your investigative skills and communication with others are the keys to success.

Walk-ins are welcome at both venues but booking ahead is advised, especially at the weekends and during the summer. Corporate team building events are popular year-round.
