Seek Inspiration from the Many Downtown Art Galleries

Posted Jan 24th, 2020 in Weekend Wish List

If you’re looking for inspirational ways to freshen up your home or workspace, you might like to consider some new artwork. Downtown Wilmington has around 20 art galleries that showcase the work of many established and up-and-coming artists. Each month, a Fourth Friday Gallery Night, organized by the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, is held downtown to celebrate art and culture.

The Gallery Night takes place from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and many downtown businesses are open later in the evenings providing additional entertainment for you to enjoy. Also, this self-guided tour is FREE and several of the galleries provide light bites and drinks to encourage you to linger awhile. New shows often open on Fourth Friday Gallery Nights so you can meet the artist and join the celebration with a glass of bubbly!

New participants this year include The Foxes Boxes on North 4th Street; Gallery Citrine on South 2nd Street; Meow Meow on Princess Street and Port City Java on North Front Street. Be sure to check them out.

If you want to plan your route, the line-up of galleries is listed on the guide available at ACES Gallery, 221 North Front Street or at any of the participating establishments. The Gallery Night guide includes a grid map showing the locations of the businesses taking part. It also includes a route map for the new Port City Trolley which provides FREE transportation connecting the five downtown districts.

The Port City Trolley makes getting around downtown easy. If you’re a visitor or have driven in from elsewhere in Wilmington, take advantage of 90 minutes of FREE parking in the City or County parking decks on 2nd Street. On-street parking is also available downtown for $1.50 per hour and you can pay by credit card or with a smartphone app. After 6:30 p.m., on-street parking is FREE. Then, hop on the FREE trolley that runs from the new multi-modal transportation hub in the Brooklyn Arts District along Front Street to Castle Street and the South Front District. The trolley runs every 40 minutes and you can hail it in most areas along its designated route.
