If you’re looking to refresh your style on a limited budget and are concerned about the impact of the fashion industry on the environment then The Wonder Shop in Downtown Wilmington is the place for you.
When you consider what impact your lifestyle has on the environment, you may feel like you are doing your part by separating your cans, jars, plastics and packaging to be recycled. You may also consign furniture and household goods; however, the availability of cheaper clothing manufactured overseas may have led you to impulse buys that have resulted in a closet full of clothes you rarely wear.
This concerned Kelsey Gibbs, owner of The Wonder Shop. She realized most mass-market, modern clothing was not sustainable because many of the fabrics used in the last 30 years are made up of ground-up plastics which are not biodegradable. Although natural fabrics are better for the environment, Kelsey felt “responsibly-made” clothing was not always affordable. She then embarked upon a zero-waste lifestyle and opened a business that reflected her values.
Since 2011, Kelsey has sourced gently used, pre-1990s, vintage garments to sell in The Wonder Shop and, where possible, she seeks out clothing and goods that are made in America. She stocks a little bit of everything for everybody: casual garments, career wear, costume jewelry, shoes and handbags. Popular requests include denim jeans and vintage t-shirts and she is often called upon to service the film industry and local theater groups.
At The Wonder Shop, even the name of the business is recycled! In the 1940s, the building on Front Street was occupied by a high-end boutique of the same name. Kelsey found clothing from the original store with labels bearing the name, “The Wonder Shop.”
Although not everyone may be as passionate about the environment as Kelsey, she hopes people will think about what they buy and where it is from. If vintage is new to you, Kelsey will also help you style your look.
