Things To Do Downtown This Weekend

Posted Feb 7th, 2020 in Weekend Wish List

The StriperFest Education Day is always a great, family-friendly event packed with fishy exhibits and fun science booths. Children can have their faces painted, play games, solve puzzles, learn to cast and more.

Thanks to the many volunteers at Cape Fear River Watch, the Striper Fest is held each year in Downtown Wilmington to celebrate fish in the Cape Fear. Experts will highlight fisheries restoration efforts in the Cape Fear River and will address other local conservation issues in a fun yet educational way. You can also learn about water quality and the effects of Gen X and PFAS on the many species living in the Cape Fear River. Entrance is $5 per person and the event takes place between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

After checking out the exhibits, head outside for a StriperFest River Cruise operated by Wilmington Water Tours. The cruises are $5 per person or $20 per family and are 45 minutes long. The boat leaves from the Coastline Convention Center Dock and pre-registration is required.

You could also spend the rest of your day downtown—walk the 1.75-mile long RiverWalk, check out one of the many attractions or browse the shops; most are just a block or two from the river. Explore The Cotton Exchange, grab a coffee at Java Dog or enjoy one of the many fabulous restaurants and entertainment venues in the center city.

Other events happening downtown this weekend include the Big and Small Family Ball at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington and the Galentine’s Day market at Flytrap Brewing.

Several downtown shops are also celebrating Galentine’s Day (for all the ‘Gals’) with sales, promotions and refreshments. Grab a punch card at one of the participating shops and visit all eight participants for a chance to win a $200 downtown shopping spree!
