Most people agree that when their feet feel good, they feel good all over. With the beachy-casual vibe in Wilmington, we are fortunate that casual shoes are accepted almost everywhere. Even though Downtown Wilmington is a riverfront city, many locals and visitors choose to wear comfy sandals year-round.
People opting for the laid-back lifestyle of this area also enjoy the convenience of having everything they need within easy reach and that includes a great place to buy footwear. Since 2004, Cape Fear Footwear (CFF) has been fulfilling that need. Located in the Cotton Exchange, this family-owned-and-operated business thrives on people’s desire to have footwear that is coastal, casual and comfy.
When Gavin Myers took the reins of the family business, the demand for brand-name sandals (aka flip-flops) was growing. Sanuk quickly became CFF’s number one brand, closely followed by Rainbow. Actually, Cape Fear Footwear has exclusive distribution rights to Sanuk in Downtown Wilmington making it easy for Gavin to be able to re-order new styles when demand is high. Other popular brands he keeps in stock include Teva, Hey Dude and Oofos.
Oofos achieved notoriety through use by athletes. The foam the sandals are made from absorbs 30 percent more energy than other footwear so Oofos became a popular choice for athletes recovering from injuries, plantar fasciitis, knee or back pain. Brands that gain popularity with athletes quickly acquire a following with the general public so Oofos created more styles for the leisure market and CFF introduced them to the store. In response to growing demand, Cape Fear Footwear now also stocks a limited number of Oofos shoes too.
If you’re curious about new styles but are waiting for the warmer weather, check out CFF’s great selection of socks, slippers, Snoozies and locally-made, Freakers. Or, browse the sale section to snag a bargain. Some items are 50 percent off until the end of January.
Cape Fear Footwear really is a gem. It is also the only independently-owned shoe store downtown. Unlike the high-pressure sales tactics you experience at some of the big box stores, the low-key personal service at CFF means you can browse at your leisure. If you have any questions, Gavin says just ask.
