If you’re familiar with the phrase, “coffee or death,” then it’s quite likely you’ve visited BespØke Coffee and Dry Goods in Downtown Wilmington. Although frequently used by many coffee drinkers to express their dislike of decaf coffee, this expression is also commonly used by coffee lovers who claim coffee is their lifeline. BespØke Coffee also has a cool graphic on one of its walls of a snake broken into pieces. Beside the graphic is the phrase, “death before decaf.”
The coffee culture is definitely alive and growing and Downtown Wilmington has several unique coffee shops that are a testament to this! BespØke Coffee opened in late 2016 and it is the newest in the center city. It sits at the corner of Princess and 2nd Streets in a unique, brick building that has a curved, corner façade, columns and ornate arches adorning the entrance. Inside, the décor is light and bright with interesting wall art and honeycomb shelving for the merchandise.
BespØke’s owner, Chris Batten, has a background in retail and he actually intended for coffee to be just a small part of the downtown store. Chris’s primary focus was to create a brand that he could apply to anything and the word, BespØke gave him that flexibility. He could customize or tailor any business to synergize with the brand. What he didn’t expect was that coffee sales would outperform the retail element of his downtown location. He quickly realized there was a demand for more space so people could meet over coffee and gig workers could hang out.
We’re sure you’ll agree he found the perfect balance. BespØke is cozy, yet adequate for 20-30 people to gather. It’s peaceful enough to get some work done, yet has a vibe that attracts people of all ages. BespØke is popular with students, creatives, locals and visitors. An older crowd of locals visit regularly, drawn by the popular, black, ceramic mugs—there’s nothing quite like drinking your favorite hot beverage out of a chunky mug.
You can also enjoy tea, hot chocolate or adult beverages at BespØke. Many people like to get their caffeine fix in the mornings and then kick back and relax with a glass of wine or beer in the afternoon. You can even snack on made-from-scratch baked goods, either vegan or non-vegan.
Chris wants people to enjoy everything about BespØke. Whether you visit for the Counter Culture Coffee from Durham, a fair-trade coffee that has a reputation for being one of the top five coffees in the country, or you want to hang out in one of the most coveted spots by the window, BespØke is a place that encourages you to enjoy yourself and be social.
