Wilmington Downtown Incorporated (WDI) is humbled to be selected by The Copper Penny as its Community Partner for December 2019. More Information about WDI
The mission of WDI is to promote the economic growth and development of Downtown Wilmington. WDI accomplishes this through collaborations and partnerships with area residents, small business owners and local government. The organization takes a holistic approach by addressing multiple issues affecting the center city including economic development, events (like Downtown Sundown), planning, safety, cleanliness, public space management, transportation and marketing.
WDI is designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is governed by a 38-member Board of Directors that includes volunteers, other local nonprofit groups and government leaders. WDI also has four committees that meet on a monthly basis. These are open to anyone with an interest. The organization has a staff of just two full-time and two part-time positions.
WDI has always championed small businesses and embraced historic preservation as a foundation for its work. The organization supports new and existing entrepreneurs and helps locally-owned and operated shops, restaurants and attractions thrive. As part of its economic growth strategy, WDI has also helped spur new homes, hotels and park space in Downtown. This comprehensive approach is working as Downtown has attracted over $610 million in new investment since 2013.
