Downtown Sundown Concert Series Announces Headlining Acts and Charity Partners
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington’s signature summertime concert series returns for its 14th season. The Downtown Sundown Concert Series presented by Outdoor Equipped will run each Friday night from May 24 through August 30, 2019. The free concerts are from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and feature both local performers and touring bands. Outdoor Equipped, a Wilmington-based retailer, is the title sponsor for the event and Wilmington Downtown Incorporated (WDI) is the concert producer.
The Downtown Sundown Concert Series is a free, family-friendly event that attracts both local residents and out of town visitors. The concerts are designed to provide interesting and fun entertainment for attendees, spur interest and activity in Downtown during the early evening hours and to raise funds for WDI's downtown development programs. Last year, over 33,000 people attended the concerts.
“Our team at Outdoor Equipped is excited to return as the title sponsor of this premier summertime event,” said company President Chad Hankinson. “As a veteran-owned and locally-owned business, the concerts help promote our roots in the region and align perfectly with the lines of clothing, footwear and gear that we offer,” he said. The flagship store for Outdoor Equipped is located at 272 N. Front Street and can be found on the web at www.outdoorequipped.com
The concerts will take place in the Ligon-Flynn Parking Lot at 20 South 2nd Street. This change is due to construction planned at Riverfront Park and along Water Street. WDI will work with the City of Wilmington and Lanier Parking to accommodate monthly parkers displaced by the Friday concerts.
“While we are sad to temporarily move away from the normal location for the 2019 season, the finished project will vastly improve Riverfront Park for future use,” said Ed Wolverton, WDI President and CEO. “The lot at the corner of South 2nd and Market Street has been used for other concerts through the years so people should be familiar with the site and appreciate the proximity of nearby shops, restaurants, parking decks and other attractions,” he said.
In addition to Outdoor Equipped, the Downtown Sundown Concert Series is sponsored by other local and regional businesses. Official sponsors include Bud Light and Tayloe Gray Digital Marketing. The Courtyard Marriott Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach remains the official hotel sponsor. Returning as the TV Sponsor is Fox Wilmington. SUNNY 103.7FM with Sunrise Broadcasting is also returning as the radio sponsor.
Headliner Performance Schedule: The schedule features various musical styles with an emphasis on tribute bands. All headlining acts are touring bands that will visit the region for their performance. WDI schedules local bands to open each show and these acts will be announced in the coming weeks.
Charity Wristband Partners: To further strengthen the community, WDI partners with other area nonprofit groups to sell wristbands. The wristbands cost $1 and can be purchased by people who are 21 and older and want to enjoy beer or wine at the show. Of course, any event attendee can also make a direct donation to the charity each week. Last year, WDI contributed approximately $10,800 to area nonprofits through the wristband program.
This year, forty-two organizations applied for one of 15 available dates. Because of this strong demand, WDI sought help from the community to select the beneficiaries by asking people to participate in an online survey to select their favorite charity.
“The online election process attracted a record 7,174 votes from the public,” said Ed Wolverton, WDI’s President. “Wilmington is a community that supports many civic causes and we wish we were able to help everyone,” he said.
Information about the bands, charities, sponsors and other details are available at the WDI website. Area residents and visitors are also encouraged to follow the concerts on Facebook to obtain the latest news and weather updates for each show as needed.
